OTAVALO

PONCHOS MARKET AND CUICOCHA

Otavalo is consider to be one of the most important tourist destination for Ecuador due to its ancestral heritage and culture. This experience starts in Quito, you’ll head north through Panamericana highway, on the two hour ride to the market you’ll reach other attractions like: Calderon “masapán” figures, the gastronomy of Guayllabamba valley and its exotic fruits as well as Cayambe with its treats. 

The road to Otavalo offers optional activities for different interests:

Archaeological zone of Cochasqui
Visit to a rose farm to know the exotic types farm in one of the local haciendas
Enjoy a falconry show while encouraging the conservation of big birds with a visit to Condor Park 

Moving on with the tour, the taita Imbabura, legendary mountain of the peoples that live in this area will welcome you. A stop it’s mandatory to take pictures of the mountain and its mirror lake San Pablo. After, you’ll arrive to Otavalo Market, one of the most famous in South America, people from the surroundings areas come, most of them in their typical customs, to offer beautiful hand made handicrafts and also the opportunity of sharing a little bit of their own culture.

Once you have finished with your shopping you’ll be driven to the unique lagoon of Cuicocha. Located into the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve, this lagoon is a one of a kind not only for  its location inside the crater of an inactive volcano but due  to the fact that it holds two islets which have been the reason for many Andean legends which seems to come alive, specially when the fog fills out the place. At the end of the visit you’ll get back to the city.
